the easiest way to reduce the axle length is to replace the thick lock nut on the non gear side with a thin one and redish the wheel.. most frames will open up easy to 128mmm and you can fit 8/9 speeds..

Gios I read that the Compact frames were built in Far East, and the adjusters were to take up the bad frame build errors !!!!! So you could get the correct rear wheel aligment.. Dont know how true it was...

Atala Looking at the frame, would think is late 80's early 90's as its got the rear brake cable inside the top tube which is very late 80's design.. Get a top paint job and it will look awesome..
