I have a kona honky tonk. Steel road bike so a bit more forgiving than the admittedly lighter aluminium models around the same price. I'm sure it could fit mud guards if needed. Plenty of old tourers out there that would do what you want.

As per my earlier post, very subjective depending on style and local trail conditions, but I found nobby nics to be horrendous! Washed out without warning, limited grip and spent the whole time trying to kill me. I'm bad enough on a bike without further complications! :lol:
