Got the bug and need advice

It's hard to answer that without knowing what you like, what you plan to do with it and what your skills are. The best thing to do is monitor all the usual sources for something in budget that catches your eye. I find a "nearest first" search for all bikes on eBay works best for me. When...

Who uses Flikr for picture hosting..

The storage limit is 1TB now, which is effectively unlimited. It's not really usable as a place to look at and discuss pictures any more but it's great for hosting.

    Dawes frame ID

I hope you've got a seatpost for it, it'll be an unusual diameter (26.2 from memory but I'd have to check). I believe the tubing is something called Mazzucato.

Which decade do you think of as Retro?

I can just about handle seeing cars from my teens and twenties being described as classics but I don't think I'll ever get used to seeing bikes I could have bought new being described as vintage.

Triple crank for my 1985 Raleigh Clubman

I would be inclined to get a 14-32 or 15-32 freewheel. It will still need a longer cage on the rear mech, but you'd need that for the triple anyway. You'll probably have to look for a 5 speed or an ultra spaced six speed unless you have a bit of clearance to spare. Use Sheldon Brown's gear...

One of those twist grips that makes a revving noise. http://www.amazon.com/ACTION-MOTORCYCLE ... B009EH3VLK Safety lollipop http://www.amazon.co.uk/Oxford-Fold-Out ... lector+arm , although I've seriously considered this version myself in the past https://www.flickr.com/photos/ghost_rid ...

wtd: sachs freewheel tool (borrow midlands area?)

If it's the same 7 speed Sachs that I have I think the Shimano tool fits.

    Own up! was it you?

It's not the cyclist's channel. Apparently he removed it from his own channel quite quickly but this person has reposted it. According to https://totalcarcheck.co.uk/FreeCheck?r ... &referrer= the van's MOT expired in September, three months before the incident and still hasn't been renewed...

    27" x 1 1/4" Tyres on Narrow Rims?

You can get 27 x 1 1/8 Continental tyres quite easily but they are horrible. Tan wall 27 x 1 1/8 are freely available in America but the postage is expensive, I wish somebody would import a job lot.

    Ratty scooter

Why does it have racks? Is it actually designed as a mode of transport rather than a toy?

    Great Alan Partridge quotes

Another of his suggestions from that episode was Cooking in Prison, which really did get made a couple of years ago.

    Digital Scales

Salter Electro Samson aren't the cheapest but they are pretty decent, they come in various capacities and division sizes. My job involves calibrating scales and I've never had to adjust an Electro Samson. In my experience no-name cheapo scales tend not to be very accurate.

Sturmey Archer gears on a 1978 Triumph Trafficmaster

IIRC these pedals are rubbish and they may well be the source of the squeak, I don't think they have any ball bearings in them. A worthwhile period upgrade would be Union pedals like these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151505610208 , which do run on ball bearings.

What is different about tyres that are meant for hookless rims?

    1980s Raleigh Royal

That is nice. I bought one last year from its original owner but he had run it into the ground in recent times and rendered it virtually unusable. This picture, taken on a work trip to Shetland, was after a lot of work and it still didn't bear close inspection. I gave it to my son soon after that.

Bottle cage clips - where to buy?

Clips here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231397360881 or the whole cage here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231378091285 The clips that come on their own don't have the rubbers to protect the frame but the ones that come with the cage do- or at least they did on mine.

    Carlton Corsair

I've a funny feeling I could make it brown/champagne again with gentle use of abrasives and some T-Cut, and I'll certainly give that a try. I'm reasonably hopeful that all I'll need to buy is a set of cables, so I should be able to keep the spend under £50, which isn't bad for a half decent 531...

    Carlton Corsair

A couple of years ago I bought an early 80s Carlton Criterium, which was a great bike but just not suited to my purposes. After a bit of research I concluded that the Corsair would be more suited to my needs. Then a Dawes Super Galaxy came up on here this time last year and I bought that...
