That old 27.5 in 26 debate

All kinds of stuff you can do with the front wheel, but only so much you can do with the rear. You can cram a bigger rim in there, but not a bigger wheel in terms of diameter. Given the limits on diameter, I'd just as soon put a fat (ish) 26" tire back there. I converted a frame like that...

    1991 Bridgestone MB-5 Trailblazer

World's nicest donor bike, ever. Personally I'd swap the saddle over to the Ritchey also. I'd hang on to the wheels too, ya don't run into pristine rims like that every day.

    1995 Lava Dome ATB

I'm typically looking for 50-75mm rise in the handlebars to get myself comfortable on a 90's mtb frame. MX style handlebars work for me, if I'm looking for good handling, and the ability to handle rough terrain. Think Surly Sunrise, VO Klunker, something like that. (The VO Utility Riser...

Were you able to locate tubeset decals?

Bici Italiane - show us your Italian MTB’s, components catalogues etc

Aha! Yes the handlebars are exquisite. Been kinda looking at Ducati handlebars myself, for the same effect. Although those are definitely bicycle handlebars... what's the story behind those?

    1991 Klein Attitude

You're a better man than I. I measured the spindle, put my hand on a rock, looked up at the sky and said, "Suntour!" I saw the light.

    Ritchey Ascent Comp 1989 updates

According to this it was made in the US and there are several examples in the database with a similar numbering scheme and at least one I saw pictured with a Logic fork. Dunno how long TR had that dude welding in his shop but it does look like late 80's geometry don't it. Should be a sweet...

    Any preferences?

Nobody knows why but the "size" of a mountain bike is based on the seat tube length, which has nothing to do with anything. I remember back when I was a kid, the folks at the Schwinn shop were focused almost exclusively on standover height, and I kinda get that for a diamond frame road bike...

Wanted Deore XT M730/732, hubs/Mavic, Araya, Specialized, Campag Wheelset

I have a pair of Atek's in rider condition, could use some polish. May have an NOS pair of Mirox rims, can't remember if I ever found a match for my orphan but I think I did... Both 32h iirc. I'll run out to storage sometime in the next couple of days to check A bunch of campy rims hit the...

Wanted Deore XT M730/732, hubs/Mavic, Araya, Specialized, Campag Wheelset

I have some Centaur hubs laced to Mirox rims, everything new or NOS. Also a set of XTR hubs laced to Stheno rims, used but good condition (the rims were NOS until I rode around on em). And some XT hubs laced to something, iirc 231 rear, 230 front, well used but rideable. Sachs new success...

    Any preferences?

I wouldn't get too far out in the woods as far as steel is concerned, I rather doubt you're looking at a 10kg build with either one The components on the Marin vary from very good to stunning (does that thing have White hubs???) OTOH I'm no fan of STX cranks cuz of the proprietary chainrings...

The effect of different paint designs on frame appearance

With artistic ambitions that vastly outpace my talent, I wonder sometimes what the next thing is gonna be. Imron served its purpose back in the day but powder coat strikes me as the superior technology, at a tiny fraction of the cost. That's probably the answer as we sit here today, and will...

    Store/keep or sell?

Wonder if you could find a bike shop with the right ambiance (ie one that doesn't just sell disposable cookie-cutter bikes) and ask if they want to hang em on the wall. Put em "on loan" You see this at motorcycle shops from time to time. Our local BMW dealer has a veritable museum upstairs...

    Ritchey Ascent Comp (1990) questions

Ole grandpa here got hisself all stirred up, due to the influence of this thread, and went for a Christmas ride today. OP, my bike looked much worse than your when I started with it In other news, these guys are planning to re-release the Ritchey Megabite tire. I imagine it'll be north a $90 US...

Full rigid 90's Stumpjumper vs full rigid 90's Marin? Any other decent quality full rigid 90's brands that won't break the bank?

^The catalog says the 900 series frames are triple butted, the technical (dealer's) manual says they are double butted. Either way I wouldn't put em in the weight weenie category. Which is fine. You only rarely find road bike steel on a mountain bike, with some exceptions (eg certain Italian...
