Hey!

So really getting into the trials builds now and I haven’t even finished the Pash yet😆

Normally my builds consist of just buying the frame then sourcing the other bits and piecing it altogether, but this times it’s gonna be a bit different.

My mate Rob sold me this beautiful 17.5” Giant ATX 890 for a super cheap price and I have great plans for it, the frame is surprisingly the exact same size Martin road in the film Chainspotting, crazy what he could do on a bike this size…how big are the seat tubes on bikes now? Non existent!

I only know of 1 other rep done on this bike, there’s loads of ‘Giant Trials Team’ builds out there but not the ATX from one of the best MTB/Trials film ever, so it will be a pretty cool one to do.

Martin seemed to run the bike fairly stock with the original shitty Dia Compe headset, and XT M737 cranks, there was other bits too I just can’t remember off the top of my head.

He would have been given a normal ATX 890 but sponsors would have supplied him with the extras like the Hope hubs, Azonic bars, Mag HS33 RaceLines, DCD (Daves Chain Device) and the classic IRC tyres which these days go for ridiculous amounts on eBay/Facebook.

I’ve also already managed to source a set of forks (Cannondale P-Bones), they will have cost me a fair bit and I’m not even finished with them yet! They have to be stripped and repainted to match the ATX, luckily I know someone that can do that for me at a small cost. One good thing is Martin or Giant decided not to run the ‘P-Bone’ decals on the forks so I won’t have to get new ones made up.

So as always I’ll keep the thread updated and see how it goes I guess, I’ve attached a pic below of the frame partially unpackaged, the P-Bones, Martin on the bike and my mate Marks replica:

Thanks for reading.

Charlie

Back then the trials/street/dirt scene was pretty new and developing.

It was so hard to get parts strong enough but also light and everyone was just kind of experimenting with what worked. Everything was such a mismatch.

Went though so many cranks , bars , rims etc.

BOOM!

Thanks Tom…ignore the fattys, the P-Bones are mine!!

Not a bad match considering I would’ve had to spend £300+ getting an exact paint match and sending the frame off etc.

Only really realise it in the dark. But when on the bike in natural light should look mint🙂

Hi all, nubie to this forum so looking for some advice.
Attempting to rebuild my sons Giant M Hawes trials bike (as per this thread) which I've now stripped down, one of my questions was the colour yellow - the Pantone ref above helps massively, does anyone have a RAL paint code?
Both steering head bearings are totally shot, so need to replace - any advice or links.
Bottom crank set, looking for a 22/24 tooth from sprocket, any recommendations?
Magura brakes still work but will refresh the mineral oil - again any advice on this procedure?
I'm sure I'll have other questions as I work through this project.
Best and thanks in advance
Dunc
